Frequently Asked Questions

What are the responsibilities of the gym supervisor? A gym supervisor is required by the Shawnee Mission School District and is responsible for enforcing the district’s policies regarding use of facilities by outside groups. One of the primary responsibilities is to protect the facility from damage. In addition, the gym supervisor has responsibilities related to game administration, including setup, distribution and completion of appropriate paperwork, and communication with the GABL managing director and officials coordinator as needed.

How are individual registrants placed on teams? Individuals are placed on preformed teams requesting players or needing players to reach the minimum roster size. Otherwise, new teams are formed from individual registrants. In order to form a new team, a volunteer coach is needed.

How is the minimum playing time rule monitored? If a parent believes his or her child is not receiving the minimum amount of playing time, the parent should first address the issue with the coach. If the situation cannot be resolved, contact the league office. If a coach believes an opposing coach has violated the minimum playing time rule, contact the league office and arrangements will be made to time the team in question at its next game. If a playing time violation is found, the coach will receive a warning. The process then will be repeated. A second violation will result in forfeiture of the game and suspension of the coach for the next game. A third violation will result in suspension of the coach for the remainder of the season. The league  also conducts random checks of playing time throughout the season.

Why aren’t scores and standings posted on the website sooner? The official scoresheets for each game are used to verify scores and determine standings before they are posted. The league  has approximately 20 game sites per day in the course of a weekend of play (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) from which it must receive scoresheets. While we are always making adjustments in our processes so we can post scores and standings earlier, we are probably still looking at mid-week before we can post this information in final form.

How are teams placed in divisions? The information used to place teams in divisions includes results of preseason games, information from coaches regarding competitive level and past performance in GABL. Another factor is the number of divisions to be created in a grade, which is driven by the number of teams registered. The placement of teams is not an exact science. There will always be some teams that do not fit well in any division or that play above or below the level indicated by the information used in placing them.

May teams change divisions after the season begins? In general, no, teams will not be able to change divisions once the season starts. In 3rd-8th grade, there will be postseason play that allows for some remixing of the teams. There have been limited cases in which teams have swapped divisions in mid-season, usually in 3rd grade where no standings are kept. On the rare occasion when this happens, the teams involved must agree to assume each others records and schedules so there is no change in schedules for the other teams in the divisions.

What is the timeline for posting game schedules in the winter program? Game schedules are divided into three groups: preseason, regular season and post season. Watch the website for information about when each group of schedules will be posted. Some groups may have multiple posting dates.

What if I know before schedules are posted that I have a conflict on a certain day? The head coach may submit a game schedule request form; however, there is no guarantee that the request can be accommodated. The form is posted on the Coaches Page of the website.

What if I find out my team has a conflict after the game schedules have been posted? The head coach can try to trade game times by contacting the other coaches involved (your opponent and the coaches playing in the time slot you would like). All coaches involved must be willing to make the switch and must confirm with the league office that they agree to the change.

Why does the league assign practice time for some teams but not for others? GABL is able to obtain practice time from the Shawnee Mission and Olathe School Districts. In order to qualify for practice time, teams must have 75 percent of their players from the respective school district. These are the only teams for which GABL assigns practice time.

Why don’t teams receive the same site, day and time for practice for the entire winter program?  The availability of schools and the total number of hours allotted to GABL varies from week-to-week based on usage by the schools themselves and other groups. For example, if a team wants to practice at a certain school every Tuesday, the school may not be available to GABL some Tuesdays during the course of the winter program. In addition, several teams may request the same school gym on the same day and at the same time. The league then tries to fill this request for at least a portion of the practices for a number of different teams.

What is the timeline for posting practice schedules? The schedule for the first week of practice is posted as soon as possible after the gym time for November is received from the school district. As soon as the first week is assigned, the schedule for the rest of November is set and posted. After the gym time for the remainder of the season is received, the practice time for December, January and February is worked on in sequence and is posted when completed.  The target date for having all practice schedules posted is January 1.
